Beware - Cryptolocker Malware

A recent exploit has begun to circulate on the internet. Cryptolocker is a particularly nasty type of malware that is delivered by an email attachment or a malware botnet.

Once you have been compromised by Cryptolocker this malware searches for one of its command servers on the internet and it generates a public-private key combination. Once the key is generated it searches your computer and any locations that you can access for a large list of common file types and encrypts your files with the generated public-private key combination. A message then pops up on your screen indicating that your files can be unencrypted if a fee (ransom) is paid (normally $300).

This malware is no joke. Without the private key you will be unable to recover your files.

Here are some prevention tips:

1) Do not open any attachments that you are not sure are one hundred percent legitimate.

2) Make sure that your computer has the latest up to date Anti-Malware and Antivirus protection installed and that the definitions are current.

3) Ensure that your operating system has the latest security updates installed.

4) Perform a full backup of your operating system and files daily. Without a backup your files may be lost forever.
