New IT Programs Offer Fast Tracks to Certification

This spring, NHTI, Concord’s Community College, will launch six new Information Technology (IT) certificate programs. These new programs are all designed to accelerate training or preparation for industry recognized certifications and/or to qualify students for entry level to mid-range jobs in the IT field. Classes can be taken day or evening. Fifty to 80% of the content of each certificate will be delivered using an online format. Hybrid courses are likely.

Entry Level Software Development Certificate
The program consists of four courses which provide students with programming and systems design skills used in business and industry. Students will use different programming languages while designing databases and creating business front ends. The curriculum includes:
· Programming Fundamentals
· Database Design and Management
· Object Oriented Programming
· Introduction to Web Programming

Graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce in tech support and quality assurance roles. This program is also a prerequisite for NHTI’s Advanced Application Development Certificate (below).

Advanced Software Development Certificate
This program consists of four courses which provide students with programming and systems design skills used in business and industry. Students will use different programming languages while designing databases and creating business front ends. The curriculum includes:
· Mobile Application Development
· Advanced Windows Programming
· Advanced Web Programming
· Introduction to C#

Graduates will be prepared for entry-level software development positions, and/or to continue their education with programs such as NHTI’s Associate Degree in Information Technology.  Prerequisite: NHTI’s Entry Level Software Development Certificate (above).

Microsoft Servers Certificate
This is an entry level certificate that serves as an introduction to Microsoft Server operating systems. The curriculum includes:
· Personal Computer Hardware and Software
· Windows Server Operating Systems
· Administering Windows Server
· Advanced Windows Server

Students who complete this program are eligible to test for the Microsoft Certified Professional Certificate, an industry-recognized certification, and to continue their education with NHTI’s IT Virtualization Certificate.

IT Virtualization Certificate
This will be the one NHTI certificate focusing on VMWare and Hyper-V virtual servers, in addition to Cisco servers. Knowledge of virtual servers is in demand and growing throughout the private and public sector. The curriculum includes:
· Database Design and Management
· Introduction to Networks
· Routing and Switching Essentials
· Virtualization

Students who complete this program are eligible to test for Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT), a worldwide industry-recognized certification, and will have the skills for jobs in server administration, network support, and virtualization using VMWare and Hyper-V.

IT Security Certificate
The curriculum includes:
· Security I
· Information Security Fundamentals
· Administering Windows Servers
· Advanced Windows Server Configuration

This certificate prepares students to earn their CompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA Security and Microsoft MCSA Server 2012 certifications. Students will have the skills for jobs in network and computer systems administration and information security anaysis, and/or to continue their education, e.g. in NHTI’s Microsoft Servers Certificate program.

Linux Certificate
The curriculum includes:

· Personal Computer Hardware and Software
· Introduction to Networks
· Introduction to Linux I
· Introduction to Linux II

This certificate prepares students to earn their CompTIA Linux+, Linux Professional Institute LPIC-1 Linux Server Professional and the SUSE Certified Linux Administrator certifications. Students will have the skills for jobs in Linux/Unix administration, server administration, and network support.

            There is a growing demand for IT professionals in New Hampshire. The table below shows the number of jobs available in the state in range of IT fields during one month last summer, with salary estimates and projected job growth over the next seven years.

These six programs are among eleven new IT certificates NHTI will be offering under a program sponsored by a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration TAACCCT Grant Agreement, #TC-26498-14-60-A-33. NHTI’s Information Technology department also offers a two-year Associate Degree program, and certificate programs in tech support and applications development.
